Tensions in the Middle East are on the rise as Iran’s Revolutionary Investigation Unit carries out missile attacks against Israeli intelligence facilities in Iraq.

According to Reuters on the 16th, “Iran’s Revolutionary Guards attacked the headquarters of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and terrorist groups located near Erbil, a city in northern Iraq, with ballistic missiles on the night of the 15th,” Iranian state media reported.

Local sources said the explosion was heard about 40km north-east of Erbil, a semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan.

“The ballistic missiles were used to attack the intelligence headquarters of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and the Islamic State (IS) in the region late tonight,” Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in a statement.

IS claimed responsibility for the two explosions that occurred at a memorial service for Supreme Commander Qassem Soleimani held in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman earlier this month. The explosion killed nearly 100 people and injured dozens more.

The Kurdish government’s Security Council also issued a statement that claimed, “At least four civilians were killed and six were injured in this airstrike in Erbil. This attack is a crime.”

The missiles hit the homes of a Kurdish businessman and a senior intelligence officer and a Kurdish intelligence center, the sources said.

Air traffic at Erbil Airport is also said to have been suspended. In the past, US troops stationed at Erbil International Airport have often been subject to drone and rocket attacks from Iran.

However, it is reported that no US facilities were damaged by this missile strike.

Israeli government officials are yet to comment on the strike. Reuters said it could not independently verify any of the reports.

Iran has attacked the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq in the past. Iran claims the area is being used as a base for separatist groups and agents of its archenemy Israel.
