Iraq Takes Multi-Pronged Approach to Combat Drug Abuse
Baghdad - In a bid to tackle the growing problem of drug abuse,Iraq’s Ministry of Health is launching a extensive strategy that includes establishing new rehabilitation centers and amending existing legislation.
Health Minister Salih Al-Hasnawi announced the initiative, stating that the government is prioritizing the fight against drug abuse through a multi-faceted approach.
“As part of prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-sudani’s government program, the health sector is committed to combating drug abuse,” Al-Hasnawi said in a statement. “this involves a collaborative effort between various ministries and organizations.”
One key aspect of the strategy involves strengthening border control and cracking down on drug trafficking.The Ministry of Interior is working to monitor traders and dealers, and fostering international cooperation with neighboring countries to stem the flow of illicit substances.
“The judicial aspect is equally crucial,” Al-Hasnawi emphasized. “We are working closely with the Health and Surroundings Committees, and also the National Anti-Drug Committee, to amend Law No.50 of 2017 to align with the National Anti-Drug Strategy for 2024-2030.”
The Ministry of Health is also expanding treatment and rehabilitation services. Al-Hasnawi highlighted the recent opening of the Al-Qanah and Al-Hayat centers in Baghdad, the enhancement of the Addiction treatment Center in Al-diwaniyah, and similar efforts underway in Basra.
“We are establishing additional centers in several provinces and activating existing mental health facilities specialized in addiction treatment,” he added.
Recognizing the importance of public awareness, the ministry is also launching media campaigns and educational initiatives. These efforts will involve collaboration with the Judiciary, Parliament, executive authorities, civil society organizations, media outlets, religious groups, tribal leaders, and youth movements.
“A unified effort is crucial to curbing the drug problem in Iraq,” Al-Hasnawi stressed.
The project includes establishing five rehabilitation centers across five provinces, each serving three provinces. These centers, designed for treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery, will operate under the Ministry of Health. Additionally, centers affiliated with the Ministry of Interior that house detainees and arrested addicts will be integrated into the program.
