Teh Palestinian village of Kisan, located in the West Bank, is facing an increasingly dire situation as residents report escalating violence from Israeli settlers and the looming threat of demolition orders impacting vital community infrastructure. Villagers describe a climate of fear and insecurity, compounded by restrictions on building and advancement imposed by Israeli authorities.
A Village Under Siege: Rising Violence and Fear
Kisan, a small agricultural community, is experiencing a dramatic increase in attacks from settlers, notably since October 7th. Ebiat, a Kisan resident, reports attacks occurring approximately once a week, a 200% increase in violence. These attacks range from intimidation and property damage to physical assaults on both people and livestock.
“They do all kinds of attacks… killing animals, attacking women, damaging property,” Ebiat explains, showing videos documenting the incidents. his 15-year-old daughter recounts settlers deliberately driving dangerously close to children walking to and from school, creating a terrifying environment. She describes the attacks as involving weapons, stone-throwing, burning tires, and masked assailants shouting in Hebrew. ”I feel not safe, I feel at any moment I might be attacked, I live in danger,” she says. The family, like many in Kisan, documents each incident with photos and videos, knowing complaints to Israeli police often go unanswered. “After October 7th violence increased… as when you go file a complaint it’s put on the shelves and [the Israeli police] don’t read it. The settlers remain free, they are not held responsible for their acts.”
The violence isn’t new, Ebiat stresses, but has intensified. The lack of accountability for settler actions fuels a sense of helplessness and vulnerability within the community.Beyond direct attacks, the constant threat creates a pervasive atmosphere of fear, impacting daily life and the well-being of residents.
Restrictions on Development and the Threat of Demolition
Adding to the insecurity, Palestinians in Kisan face meaningful obstacles to building and maintaining their community. Israeli permits for construction in the West Bank are notoriously tough to obtain, with the vast majority being rejected. “Israel is putting obstacles for any building, working, paving roads. When they see us working they immediately come and confiscate the materials,” Ebiat states.
This restriction on development has severe consequences. Unpaved roads, for example, contributed to a tragic death when a resident was unable to reach medical care after a snake bite. Now,a school,a mosque, and the local council building are all under threat of demolition. These demolitions would cripple the village’s infrastructure and further erode the community’s ability to thrive.
The Impact of the Occupied territories Bill
The proposed Occupied Territories Bill in Ireland has garnered attention in Kisan, offering a potential glimmer of hope. Ebiat believes the bill, if implemented, could significantly impact the situation on the ground. ”When such a Bill is implemented in Ireland, it will limit the work of those settlers… it will limit their expansion… you will stop financing these settlers.” He emphasizes the importance of international awareness and support for their plight.
“The people’s main demand is to feel safe in our home… If there is an occupation I want it to guarantee my safety,” Ebiat pleads. He highlights the disparity between the Israeli narrative and the reality experienced by Palestinians in Kisan, stressing the need for their stories to be heard internationally.
A Determined Community Facing an Uncertain Future
Despite the immense challenges, the residents of Kisan remain steadfast in their determination to remain on their ancestral land. ”We will survive, we don’t have another place to go to… My grand-grandfather was born here, my grandfather, my father,” ebiat declares, embodying the deep-rooted connection to the land that sustains the community. Though, survival is becoming increasingly difficult in the face of relentless violence, restrictive policies, and the looming threat of displacement. The future of Kisan hangs in the balance, dependent on international pressure and a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its Palestinian residents.
