two young tourists experienced a terrifying ordeal while on vacation in Albufeira, Portugal, when a taxi driver allegedly forced his way into thier hotel room and attempted to kiss them after a night out. The harrowing incident, shared on TikTok, has garnered widespread attention and serves as a stark warning to travelers.
Night Out Turns into Nightmare
Samantha Johnson and Saorla van Heerden, both 20 and from Belfast, were enjoying a last-minute getaway when the attack occurred. After a night on the popular ”strip” in Albufeira, Samantha was feeling tired, and the pair decided to take a taxi back to their hotel.
“We were out on the strip on our first night when Sam was feeling really tired, so we decided to get a taxi home,” explained Saorla, a student. The taxi driver informed them he only accepted cash, prompting Saorla to offer to go inside the hotel to retrieve the money while Samantha remained in the vehicle as a sign of good faith.This seemingly simple arrangement quickly escalated into a frightening situation. Samantha,an apprentice,recounted the moment the driver’s behavior turned aggressive. “I was sitting in the taxi just having a casual conversation with him, when he decided to get out of the car. I was a bit confused. He came round and opened my door, and without saying a word, he took me out of the taxi and put me in a headlock.”
Forced Entry and Assault
The driver then dragged Samantha towards the hotel room where Saorla had gone to get the cash. Saorla was shocked to see the driver approaching with Samantha in a headlock.
“I can’t remember what was said, but he carried Sam into the room and then tried to kiss her,” Saorla stated. “I forcefully ripped him off, but he kept coming back to her – I had to put my hand in between their faces at one point.”
Despite Saorla’s desperate attempts to intervene, the driver continued his unwanted advances, even attempting to kiss Saorla herself while she shouted at him to leave. the two friends ultimately managed to push the man out of the room and lock the door, bringing the terrifying ordeal to an end.
Aftermath and Warning to Travelers
The emotional toll of the attack was significant.”I ended up throwing up and Sam passed out on the bed,” Saorla shared. “It was a bit of a blur, I think we were a bit in shock about what happened.”
The pair have as shared their story on TikTok, where it has received over 93,200 views, hoping to raise awareness and support others who may have experienced similar situations. They are now urging travelers to prioritize safety when using taxis.
“We’re going to order Ubers from now on because they seem like the safer option,” Samantha said. “And we lock the doors at all times.” Both women admitted to feeling anxious about encountering the same driver again, constantly scanning the faces of taxi drivers on the street.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and caution while traveling, particularly when relying on unfamiliar transportation services. Travelers are advised to share their location with trusted contacts, utilize ride-sharing apps with tracking features, and remain aware of their surroundings at all times. Reporting any suspicious behavior to local authorities is also crucial.
