A Decade of Upgrades Ahead
Ireland is embarking on a transformative €10 billion investment in its water infrastructure over the next five years. Uisce Éireann, the national water utility, is leading this unprecedented program designed to modernize aging systems, improve water quality, and ensure a more secure and resilient water supply for homes and businesses across the country.
The aspiring plan focuses on several key areas: tackling water leakages – a notable source of waste – repairing and replacing aging pipes, minimizing disruptive water supply outages, and upgrading water treatment plants to meet current and future demands. Hundreds of projects are already underway in every corner of Ireland, promising substantial improvements to the nation’s most vital resource.
What to Expect: Short-Term Disruption for Long-Term Gain
While the long-term benefits of these upgrades are substantial, Uisce Éireann acknowledges that short-term disruptions are unavoidable. Construction and maintenance work will inevitably lead to temporary water outages and other supply interruptions. To mitigate the impact on consumers, the utility is strongly urging customers to sign up for free text alerts.
These alerts provide real-time updates tailored to your specific location, allowing you to prepare for planned or unexpected interruptions. Alerts cover critical information such as water outages, boil water notices, and any other supply issues expected to last longer than four hours.
Low Uptake of Vital Alert System
Despite the clear benefits, uptake of the free text alert service remains surprisingly low. As of today, only approximately 250,000 of the two million homes and businesses served by Uisce Éireann have registered. this means the vast majority of customers are possibly unaware of upcoming disruptions, hindering their ability to plan accordingly.
Since the service launched in 2024, over one million text alerts have already been issued, demonstrating the system’s effectiveness in keeping customers informed during critical events.Geoffrey Bourke, Head of customer Operations with Uisce Éireann, strongly encourages everyone to sign up and stay connected
as the upgrade program progresses.
How to Sign Up for Free Text Alerts
