Israel Closes Embassy in Dublin Amid Strained Relations with Ireland
Israel Shuts Dublin Embassy, Citing Ireland’s ‘Extreme Anti-Israel Policies’
Dublin, Ireland – Tensions between Israel and Ireland have escalated dramatically, culminating in Israel’s decision to shutter its embassy in Dublin. The move, announced by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, comes amid a series of diplomatic disputes.
“The decision to close the Israeli embassy in Dublin was made in light of the Irish government’s extreme anti-Israel policies,” the ministry stated, according to reports. The closure took effect on Sunday.
Relations between the two nations have soured in recent months, fueled by Ireland’s recognition of Palestine as a state and its support for an International Criminal Court (ICC) case accusing Israel of genocide in the gaza Strip.Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Ireland of double standards and antisemitic rhetoric. “Ireland has crossed every red line in its relationship with israel,” Saar declared, alleging that Ireland’s actions are rooted in the delegitimization and demonization of the jewish state.Adding fuel to the fire, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris stated in November that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he traveled to Ireland, following an ICC arrest warrant issued against Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.
In response to the escalating tensions,Israel announced plans to invest its diplomatic resources in strengthening ties with other nations, including the opening of a new embassy in Moldova.
“We will adjust the network of Israeli diplomatic missions while taking into consideration, among other things, the positions and actions of various countries towards Israel in the diplomatic arena,” saar explained.
Ireland’s recognition of Palestine as a “sovereign and independent state” encompassing the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in May, followed by the establishment of full diplomatic relations, triggered Israel’s retaliatory measures. Spain, Norway, and Slovenia followed suit, further straining relations.
In november, Ireland welcomed the appointment of Palestine’s first full-fledged ambassador to Dublin. Prime Minister Harris expressed regret over Israel’s embassy closure, vehemently denying accusations of anti-Israel sentiment.
“I completely reject the assertion that Ireland is anti-Israel. Ireland is pro-peace, pro-human rights, and pro-international law,” Harris wrote on X, formerly known as twitter.
The closure of the Israeli embassy marks a significant downturn in relations between the two countries, raising concerns about the future of diplomatic engagement.
