Gaza Deaths Rise as U.S. Announces Second Phase of Ceasefire
Israel killed at least 10 Palestinians across Gaza on thursday, coinciding with a U.S. announcement that Israel and Hamas had progressed to the second phase of a 20-point ceasefire deal. The developments cast a shadow over efforts to end the ongoing conflict.
The Wafa news agency reported Israeli military bombing of two homes in Deir el-Balah, belonging to the al-Hawli and al-Jarou families.Health officials confirmed a 16-year-old was among the six Palestinians killed in the strikes.
The Israeli military identified one of those killed as Muhammad al-Hawli, claiming he was a commander in Hamas’s Qassam Brigades. Al Jazeera’s Ibrahim al-Khalili, reporting from gaza City, confirmed the death of a “senior figure of the Qassam Brigades” and said the attack signaled Israel’s intention to dictate the terms of the ceasefire’s next phase.
israel has set the terms of the next phase of the ceasefire, which will see the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic governance overseen by an international “board of Peace”, with the option of “escalation” remaining very much “on the table”.
Additional deaths were reported near Al-Alam roundabout west of Rafah city, at a police post near Al-Nablusi Junction southwest of Gaza city, and in an air attack on the al-Khatib family home in the Nuseirat refugee camp.
Hamas condemned the targeting of the al-Hawli home as a “despicable crime,” accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of disrespecting the October ceasefire.The group did not confirm al-Hawli’s position within its ranks.
As the ceasefire began, at least 451 Palestinians, including over 100 children, have been reported killed. Israel has ordered residents out of more then half of Gaza, where its troops remain positioned behind a mobile “yellow line.” Three Israeli soldiers have been killed during the same period.
U.S.special envoy Steve witkoff announced on X Wednesday the launch of the second phase of the Trump administration’s 20-point plan, stating it would “move from ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic governance, and reconstruction.”
