Hostage release Hinges on Gaza Withdrawal, Hamas Says as Ceasefire Talks Stall
Doha, Qatar – As ceasefire negotiations between israel and Hamas drag on in Doha, a Hamas official has stated that the release of Israeli hostages is contingent on a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and a permanent end to hostilities. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that despite ongoing talks, Israel remains “obstinate” on agreeing to a ceasefire and withdrawal. “Untill now, the occupation continues to be obstinate over an agreement over the issues of the ceasefire and withdrawal, and has made no step forward,” the official said.
This statement comes amidst reports that Hamas has provided Israel with a list of hostages,a claim denied by the Israeli prime minister’s office. Adding to the tension, Hamas released a video over the weekend showing 19-year-old Israeli captive Liri Albag pleading with her government to secure a deal for her release. Albag was captured along with six other female soldiers during the october 7th Hamas attack on the Nahal Oz army base.
That devastating attack, which killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel and resulted in the capture of 251 hostages, triggered Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza. The Israeli military reports that over 100 “terrorist” sites were targeted across the Gaza Strip over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of dozens of Hamas militants.
Simultaneously occurring, the death toll in Gaza continues to climb. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, at least 45,805 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes as of Saturday. Health sources told Reuters that 88 people were killed in Gaza on Saturday alone, with an additional 17 fatalities reported on Sunday from four separate Israeli attacks.
The stalemate in Doha underscores the immense challenges facing negotiators as they attempt to broker a lasting peace agreement. The fate of the hostages, the future of Gaza, and the prospect of a lasting ceasefire remain uncertain.
