Israel has launched a military operation against Iran, following a campaign that effectively dismantled Hezbollah’s military capabilities in Lebanon. The strategy mirrors Israel’s earlier actions against Hezbollah, where it eliminated key leaders before targeting the militia’s extensive missile arsenal.
Last September, Israel conducted precision strikes against Hezbollah, a militia armed by iran with over 100,000 missiles aimed at Israel. These missiles, posing an existential threat, prompted Israeli hospitals to prepare for mass casualties. The destruction of Hezbollah’s leadership in bunkers, followed by the booby-trapping of interaction devices used by its rank and file, led to the militia’s rapid collapse.
An Israeli reserve officer said the missiles were gone after waves of Israeli bombs last fall. He expressed wonder that the threat had been eliminated.
The Islamic Republic had already been weakened, after Israel exploded a bomb in Tehran, killing a Hamas leader. Iran’s leaders launched missiles and drones toward Israel, but the attack proved ineffectual, as most were intercepted with help from the U.S., Europe, and Arab nations.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the targets included Iran’s ballistic missiles. He said the attack would last a few days. “We can’t leave these threats for the next generation,” netanyahu said. “If we don’t act now, there won’t be a next generation.”
president Trump called the attack “excellent.” Israel released footage of commandos on the ground in Iran, and claimed to have killed most of Iran’s air force leadership after luring them to a meeting.
Meanwhile, the conflict in Gaza continues, with important casualties on both sides. Israel views Hamas as an Iranian client, despite differences between the Shi’ite-aligned Iran and the Sunni Hamas. The elimination of Israel remains their common goal, with Hamas’s oct. 7 attack intended to trigger a broader conflict involving Hezbollah.
Instead, Iran instructed Hezbollah to hold back. For the next year, Tehran played the military equivalent of chess, sending a few missiles a day over the border in tit-for-tat exchanges that signaled no change, status quo. As if this could go on forever.
What’s next
The coming days will reveal the extent of the damage inflicted on Iran’s military infrastructure and the long-term consequences for regional stability.
