At least 31 people, including a rescue worker, were killed in widespread Israeli attacks across southern Lebanon on May 8, 2026, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.
The National News Agency described the day as one of the deadliest since fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah resumed on March 2, 2026.
In the Tyre district, two airstrikes on the town of Toura killed five people. Rescue teams remained on the scene searching for a missing girl trapped under the rubble.
A separate Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle between Kfarchouba and Kfarhamam in the Hasbaiyya district, resulting in the death of a civil defense worker.
Additional strikes were reported in the Nabatieh and Bint Jbeil districts. In as-Sultaniyah, four people were killed during the operations.
The escalation occurred despite a ceasefire that was announced on April 17, 2026, and subsequently extended until May 17, 2026. Reports indicate that Israeli strikes in Lebanon have continued on a near-daily basis regardless of the agreement.
The attacks have specifically impacted emergency response efforts in the region. Lebanese rescue workers have reported adopting a strategy of waiting 15 minutes after an initial strike before responding to the scene.
This delay is intended to protect responders from a “double-tap” policy, where a second strike hits the same location after first responders have arrived. Reports indicate more than 100 rescue workers have been killed since March 2026.
