Israel has launched a series of intensive air strikes across Lebanon, including the most significant wave of attacks on the capital, Beirut, since the current conflict began. The military operations have occurred as a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran struggles to take effect, leading to warnings from Iranian officials that Tehran may withdraw from the agreement.

According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, the strikes have killed more than 200 people. Other reports indicate the death toll has reached at least 254 people, with 837 others wounded. The assault targeted more than 100 sites across Lebanon that Israel claims are linked to Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group.

Attacks on Beirut

The strikes on Beirut were described by Israel’s defense minister as a surprise strike. In one instance, Israel reported launching 100 different attacks within a 10-minute window. These operations hit areas of the city that had not previously been targeted and where no evacuation orders had been issued.

Impacted areas included the Bechara El Khoury neighborhood in the city center and the Corniche al-Mazraa neighborhood. Witnesses described a scene of panic, with warplanes leveling several buildings and filling the skies with smoke. Emergency responders reported struggling to extinguish flaming wreckage and clear crumpled cars from the streets.

Lebanese hospitals issued urgent calls for blood donations, and the ministry of health urged citizens to clear the streets to allow ambulances to reach the injured.

Ceasefire Disputes and Diplomatic Tension

The escalation comes hours after the United States and Iran announced a ceasefire agreement. However, the scope of this truce is a point of significant contention. The office of Israel’s prime minister stated that the two-week Middle East ceasefire did not include Lebanon.

This position contradicts a statement made by Pakistan, acting as a mediator. U.S. President Donald Trump characterized the situation in Lebanon as a separate skirmish rather than part of the deal with Iran.

Iran has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire deal through the attacks on Wednesday. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards have threatened a military response, and Iranian officials warned that Tehran could withdraw from the agreement entirely.

Prospects for Negotiations

Despite the ongoing violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on April 9, 2026, that he has instructed his cabinet to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible.

Netanyahu stated that these talks would focus on two primary objectives: the disarming of Hezbollah and the establishment of peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts involving the broader regional conflict continue. Iranian negotiators were expected to travel to Pakistan on April 9, 2026, to meet with a U.S. Delegation on Saturday, April 12, 2026, for the first peace talks of the war.

The volatility of the situation has led to widespread fear in Lebanon that the conflict could worsen. On the streets of Beirut, residents reported a renewed sense of panic as Israeli drones continued to operate overhead following the strikes.
