Hostage Remains Returned to Israel

The body of Eliyahu Margalit, a 75-year-old Israeli citizen, has been identified as one of the hostages returned by Hamas overnight, according to a statement from ⁤Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on february⁢ 29,⁣ 2024. The Israeli military formally notified Margalit’s family of the identification.

The remains were transferred to Israeli security forces in ⁢Gaza via the Red Cross and later taken to a medical analysis center ‍in Israel ⁣for identification, as‍ reported by the Prime Minister’s office the previous night.

Details of Eliyahu Margalit’s Abduction and Family

Eliyahu Margalit was⁤ abducted during the ⁤Hamas-led attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz‍ on October ‍7, 2023, which initiated the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He was 75 years old at the time ⁢of his death. He is survived by his wife, three children, and grandchildren.

Notably, ⁢Margalit’s daughter, Nili Margalit, was also taken hostage during the October ⁣7th attack but was released under a hostage release agreement in November 2023.

Ceasefire Agreement and Hostage Exchange

The return of Margalit’s remains is part of a ceasefire agreement between⁢ Israel and Hamas, brokered with support from the United States. As of February 29, 2024, Hamas had returned all 20 ⁤surviving hostages and⁤ the remains of 10 out of 28 known ⁣deceased hostages.

Under the terms of the⁤ agreement, Hamas⁣ was obligated to hand over all ⁤remaining hostages,⁢ both⁤ living and deceased, by Monday morning.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem stated on February 28, 2024, that the militant group “continues to uphold its commitment to the ceasefire agreement… and it will⁤ continue working to complete the full prisoner exchange process.”

Israel’s Commitment to⁣ Returning All Hostages

Prime ‍Minister⁣ netanyahu’s office affirmed ‍Israel’s unwavering commitment to ⁣securing ⁣the return of all remaining hostages. The statement emphasized that Israel “will not‍ compromise… and ⁤will spare no effort until we return all of the fallen abductees, down to the last one.”
