Syria‘s Druze Community Faces Catastrophe Amidst Escalating Violence
Sweida,Syria – The Druze community in Syria’s southern Sweida province is grappling with a dire humanitarian crisis,as escalating violence adn a severe lack of essential resources threaten the lives and well-being of its inhabitants. Reports from the ground paint a grim picture of burning homes, overwhelmed medical facilities, and a desperate shortage of basic necessities, including food and medicine.
Humanitarian Situation Described as “Catastrophic”
Local news outlets are sounding the alarm, with Ryan Marof, Editor-in-chief of Suwayda 24, describing the humanitarian situation as “catastrophic.” He highlighted the critical scarcity of essential supplies, stating, “We cannot find milk for children.” This stark reality underscores the immense suffering faced by families in the region.
The United Nations has echoed these concerns, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, calling for an immediate end to the bloodshed. Turk also demanded “self-reliant, prompt and obvious investigations into all violations” that have led to the current crisis.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that health facilities are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties.Power cuts are further exacerbating the situation, hindering the preservation of bodies in overflowing morgues. Stephan Sakalian, the head of the ICRC’s delegation in Syria, emphasized the severity of the crisis, stating, “The humanitarian situation in Sweida is critical. People are running out of everything.” He added, “Hospitals are increasingly struggling to treat the wounded and the sick, and families are unable to bury their loved ones in dignity.”
Roots of the Conflict and Regional Implications
The latest wave of violence reportedly erupted on Sunday following the kidnapping of a Druze vegetable merchant by local Bedouin. This incident triggered a cycle of retaliatory abductions, according to the Britain-based observatory. The village, now under the control of the Bedouin and their allies, has witnessed scenes of destruction, with an AFP correspondent observing burning homes and shops.
Israel, which shares a significant Druze population, has pledged support to the Druze in Sweida, valuing it at nearly US$600,000,including food and medical supplies. While Israel has vowed to defend the Druze community, some analysts suggest a broader geopolitical motive. They posit that Israel may aim to weaken the Syrian military, its historic adversary, by exploiting a perceived vulnerability following the toppling of Bashar al-Assad, an Iranian ally, by Sunni islamists in December.
The ongoing conflict and the resulting humanitarian crisis in Sweida highlight the complex and volatile nature of the Syrian conflict, with profound implications for the region’s minority communities and broader geopolitical dynamics.
