Israeli Negotiators Depart Doha Amidst Stalled Negotiations
Doha, Qatar – Hopes for a ceasefire in Gaza have been dealt a blow as Israeli negotiators have departed Doha, Qatar, where crucial talks aimed at securing a truce and the release of hostages were underway. The move signals a meaningful setback in the ongoing efforts to de-escalate the devastating conflict.
Stalemate in Talks: ”No Collapse,” Says Israeli Official
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to publicly address the reasons behind the departure of his negotiating team from doha. Though,a senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, insisted that the talks had not collapsed. The official, as reported by The Times of Israel, criticized Hamas‘s “rejectionist and unfortunate approach,” stating that a return to negotiations would only be feasible “as soon as the right way is found to reduce the gaps and reach the closing stage.”
The latest round of discussions, involving Qatari and Egyptian mediators, had been ongoing for over two weeks, highlighting the complex and protracted nature of these diplomatic efforts.
Dire Humanitarian Situation in Gaza Worsens
The diplomatic impasse comes as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza reaches catastrophic levels. Earlier on thursday, the United Nations’ Palestinian refugee agency (Unrwa) issued a stark warning: one in five children in gaza City is now suffering from malnutrition, wiht cases reportedly increasing daily. This alarming statistic underscores the severe impact of the ongoing conflict and blockade on the civilian population.
More than 100 international aid organizations and human rights groups have echoed these concerns, issuing a joint warning of impending mass starvation and urging governments worldwide to take immediate action.
Israel’s Stance on Aid and Malnutrition
Israel, which maintains control over the entry of all supplies into Gaza, has consistently denied imposing a siege. The Israeli government attributes any instances of malnutrition to Hamas, accusing the group of hoarding or diverting aid.
Aid deliveries to Gaza were halted by Israel in early March following a two-month ceasefire. While the blockade was partially eased after nearly two months, the situation has as deteriorated, with severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine becoming commonplace.
Fatalities Amidst Aid Distribution
The United Nations human rights office has reported a grim reality on the ground: over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military while attempting to access food aid in the past two months. A significant portion of these fatalities, at least 766, occurred near one of the four Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF) distribution centers, which are operated by US private security contractors and situated within Israeli military zones. An additional 288 individuals have been reported killed near UN and other aid convoys.
israel has countered these reports by accusing Hamas of instigating chaos at aid sites. The Israeli military maintains that its troops have only fired warning shots and do not intentionally target civilians.
The current conflict in gaza was initiated by Israel in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of 251 hostages. According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, at least 59,106 people have been killed in the territory since the Israeli military campaign began.
