Israeli forces have intercepted boats participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission aiming to deliver aid to Gaza, according to organizers and Israeli media. The interceptions occurred in the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) away from Gaza, with seven of the 58 vessels reportedly seized near the Greek island of Crete.

The Global Sumud Flotilla reported that Israeli military speedboats approached their vessels, using lasers and displaying semi-automatic assault weapons. Participants were ordered to the front of the boats and instructed to kneel, the flotilla stated on Thursday. Communication has been lost with 11 vessels, and Israeli media claims seven boats have been intercepted.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, stated on social media that the flotilla was “stopped before reaching our area” and that Israeli soldiers were acting with “determination dealing with a group of delusional attention-seeking agitators.”

Background on the Global Sumud Flotilla

The Global Sumud Flotilla, also referred to as the Global Freedom Flotilla, is an international, civil society-led maritime initiative. It was formed in July 2025 with the stated purpose of breaking the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip and delivering humanitarian aid. The flotilla includes participants from multiple countries, with over 500 people sailing and over 15,000 registered to participate.

This is not the first attempt to challenge the blockade of Gaza through maritime efforts. Previous flotillas, including the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla, have faced similar interventions from Israeli forces. The blockade has been in place since 2007, imposed by Israel and Egypt, and has significantly restricted the movement of people and goods in and out of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Response and Justification

According to an Israeli source cited by Israel Army Radio, Israel began seizing control of the aid ships heading towards Gaza. The Israeli military has not yet issued a comprehensive statement detailing the rationale behind the interceptions, but Ambassador Danon’s comments suggest a view that the flotilla is a provocative act rather than a legitimate humanitarian effort.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as Israeli forces continue to intercept and potentially seize control of the remaining vessels in the Global Sumud Flotilla. The flotilla organizers have called on governments to intervene and protect the fleet.
