(Cairo = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Sang-hoon = Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on the 21st (local time) that he would put military pressure on Hamas within the next few days to rescue hostages in his country.

Prime Minister Netanyahu criticized Hamas in his Passover speech (April 22-30, a holiday commemorating the Exodus of the Jews) published today, saying, “Unfortunately, Hamas has rejected all offers to release hostages.”

He added, “Also, Hamas has not abandoned its extremist views, increasing division within us and increasing pressure from the international community on the Israeli government.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “So we will deal a painful blow to Hamas. It will happen soon. .” he emphasized.

It has not yet been confirmed whether today’s comments signal the start of a campaign to enter Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip.

However, local daily Israel Times reported that Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzy Halevi approved the Southern Command’s battle plan for that day.

The Israeli military said, “With the presence of Major General Yaron Pilkelman, Commander of the Southern Forces, a plan to continue the war was approved along with an assessment of the war situation.”

Israel believes that the Hamas leadership and remnants are hiding here on the border with Egypt, and that the operation to enter Rafah is essential to ending the war.

However, the international community, including the United States, has been persuading Israel, saying that if street fighting breaks out in Rafah, where around 1.4 million refugees are gathered, a huge loss of life is expected .

Prime Minister Netanyahu announced on the 8th that he would definitely carry out the operation to enter Rafah and that a date had been set for this.

He also said in relation to American media reports that the United States plans to impose sanctions on Israeli soldiers for the first time in history, saying, “If anyone thinks they can sanction Israeli military units, I will fight them with all my ability.”

According to a report by the US internet media Axios the day before, the US plans to impose sanctions on the ‘Netza Yehuda Battalion’ of the Israeli army within a few days on charges of human rights violations in the occupied West Bank .

This unit, made up of ultra-Orthodox Jews, is located on the occupied West Bank of the Jordan River.

US officials explained that sanctions against this unit were based on events that occurred before Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7 last year.

The Israeli military said it was not fully aware of the status of the US sanctions campaign.
