“It looks like it was aimed at anyone”… What is Netflix’s position on the controversy over the portrayal of the murderer and CEO Lee Jae-myung?

[오토트리뷴=김하정 기자] Recently, a character reminiscent of Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, appears in the new Netflix drama ‘Murderer’, causing controversy.

In the Netflix drama ‘Murderer’, which was released on the 9th, suspicions were raised that the CEO of the construction company chairman suspected of corruption was a person who portrayed the Democratic Party leader along with Lee Jae-myung, drawing attention.

It was claimed that the appearance of Chairman Hyung in the play, with his gray hair pulled back and wearing round glasses, was similar to CEO Lee’s appearance. Controversy arose not only about appearance, but also about various settings related to Chairman Hyung.

Suspicions were raised that the scene of imprisoned Chairman Hyung eating sushi in the reception room was related to the ‘incident of alleged illegal misappropriation of corporate cards’ by CEO Lee’s wife, Mrs. Kim Hye-kyung. This is because one of the menu items that Mrs. Kim Hye-kyung had delivered to her home at the time was sushi.

Controversy also arose over the fact that Chairman Hyung’s granddaughter’s name was ‘Hyung Ji-su’. In the original, a character who was only set up as ‘Chairman Hyung’s granddaughter’ appears under the name of ‘Hyung Ji-su’, reminding us of CEO Lee’s past ‘swearing-in-sister-in-law incident’.

Chairman Hyung’s prisoner number, ‘4421’, is also controversial. It is being interpreted in relation to the fact that the profits raised by Jeil Construction, which received six blocks of apartment sites in Daejang-dong from Seongnam City in the past, are estimated at 442.1 billion won.

The controversial ‘sushi eating scene’, ‘Chairman Brother’s granddaughter’s name’, and ‘Chairman Brother’s prisoner number’ are becoming more of a hot topic because they are not included in the original work.

In response to this controversy, some netizens are of the opinion that “It wasn’t just the appearance that resembled each other, but the various settings were perfectly intentional,” while others said, “It’s too much of a fit,” and “It’s not right to even include what was in the original.” .

As the controversy grew, Netflix stated that it was “unfounded.” A Netflix official said, “We came across related information floating around on the Internet. He denied it, saying, “The prisoner number of Chairman Hyeong Jeong-guk that appears in the work is not a meaningful number and has nothing to do with a specific person.”

Meanwhile, ‘Murderer’s Puzzle’ is a work based on a Naver webtoon serialized from 2010 to 2011 and was released on Netflix on the 9th.
