(New York = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ko Il-hwan = The UN Security Council convened to discuss the issue of North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test launch, but only internal differences were exposed.

The Security Council held an open meeting on the afternoon of the 11th (local time) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to discuss the issue of North Korea’s missile test launch.

The meeting was convened at the request of South Korea and Japan, as well as the United States, which is the chair of the Security Council.

Most of the permanent members of the Security Council, such as the United States, Britain, and France, as well as Albania, Ireland, and Norway, condemned North Korea for violating UN sanctions against North Korea.

However, China and Russia have said that tightening sanctions does not help solve the problem.

In particular, China argued that the crisis was heightened because the US did not comply with North Korea’s demands.

China’s ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, argued that the current tensions arise because the US has violated the action-for-action principle promised at the Singapore summit with North Korea.

At a meeting convened to discuss the North Korean missile issue, he was also seen criticizing AUKUS, a security alliance between the United States, Britain and Australia.

Aiming at the US’ decision to provide nuclear submarines to Australia, Ambassador Jang raised his voice, saying, “Some countries are demanding the denuclearization of North Korea, but they are going against the spread of nuclear submarines themselves.”

“China’s global security principles are an important guideline for resolving issues on the Korean Peninsula,” he said.

Anna Evstigniva, the Russian deputy ambassador to the United Nations, also pointed the arrow to the United States, which has been leading sanctions against North Korea, saying, “The Security Council has closed its eyes to positive changes in North Korea in the past and only tightened sanctions.”

Deputy deputy commander-in-chief Evstigniva clearly opposed the tightening of sanctions, saying, “If the sanctions are tightened further, it is a threat to the North Korean people.”

He also revealed that Russia and China are preparing a resolution calling for dialogue instead of sanctions against North Korea.

In response, US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, countered that China and Russia were holding back the efforts of the international community.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield said “silence has no effect”, referring to the fact that China and Russia have been blocking the Security Council’s tightening of sanctions against North Korea over the past four years.

“We can’t wait for North Korea to test a nuclear weapon,” he stressed.

He also dismissed the resolution that China and Russia are preparing to “water down” the US sanctions resolution on North Korea, calling it “inappropriate.”

South Korea and Japan also attended the meeting.

Cho Hyun, South Korean Ambassador to the United Nations, said, “North Korea’s actions have become rather bold because the Security Council has been silent on North Korea’s ballistic missile launches earlier this year. “He said.

“The Security Council and the international community must send a clear message to North Korea that they cannot tolerate North Korea’s additional nuclear test and will respond strongly,” Cho added.
