Arianna Fontana etched her name into Olympic history on Wednesday, becoming Italy’s most decorated Olympian with a silver medal in the women’s 3,000-meter short track relay at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games. The 14th Olympic medal of her illustrious career surpasses the previous record of 13 held by fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti, a mark that stood for over six decades.

The Italian team, comprised of Fontana, Elisa Confortola, and others, finished second behind South Korea, securing a hard-fought silver. Canada claimed the bronze medal. While the South Korean victory marked their first short track gold of these Games, the day undeniably belonged to Fontana.

“It’s something incredible. I still haven’t found the right words to describe this moment and everything I’m feeling,” Fontana told reporters, visibly moved by the achievement. “I’m trying to take it all in, to stay present, to enjoy this medal with the girls, and maybe tomorrow, when I wake up, it will all really sink in.”

The race itself was a display of intense competition and strategic maneuvering. The Italian team demonstrated resilience and determination, battling for position throughout the 3,000 meters. Despite a strong push in the later stages, they were unable to overtake the relentless South Korean squad.

The atmosphere inside the Milano Ice Skating Arena was electric, fueled by a passionate Italian crowd eager to witness history. Adding to the significance of the moment, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was in attendance, cheering on Fontana and her teammates.

“She told us she had watched the race and was cheering for us. She was thrilled and gave us so many compliments,” shared Elisa Confortola, reflecting on the Prime Minister’s support. “We really appreciated it. She was genuinely very happy, and we even felt a bit embarrassed, but it was truly a special moment.” Meloni also took a commemorative photo with the team, further solidifying the national pride surrounding Fontana’s accomplishment.

The silver medal adds to Fontana’s already impressive Olympic collection, which includes golds from previous Winter Games. Her longevity and consistent performance at the highest level of the sport are a testament to her dedication, skill, and unwavering spirit. At 54 days shy of her 36th birthday, Fontana continues to defy expectations and inspire a new generation of short track skaters.

The day wasn’t without disappointment for the Italian team. Pietro Sighel faced elimination in the semifinals of the men’s 500 meters, falling victim to contact during a highly competitive heat. Despite the setback, the Italian federation defended Sighel, stating he was unfairly penalized. The federation’s statement underscores the often-physical and unpredictable nature of short track racing.

While the Dutch team, led by Xandra Velzeboer, remains a dominant force in the discipline, Italy’s performance at these Games has been a source of national pride. The women’s relay silver, coupled with Fontana’s historic achievement, has energized the Italian contingent and set a positive tone for the remainder of the competition.

Fontana’s journey to becoming Italy’s most decorated Olympian began at the 2006 Turin Winter Games, a time when Romano Prodi was leading Italy as Prime Minister. From a young age, she quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of short track speed skating. Now, nearly two decades later, she stands as a symbol of Italian sporting excellence.

“It’s the 14th, but most importantly, it’s a silver,” Fontana said, emphasizing the team aspect of the achievement. “A dream for all of us.” The Italian team’s performance in Milan has not only secured valuable medals but has also captured the hearts of a nation, solidifying Fontana’s legacy as a true Olympic legend.
