Chinese fashion photographer Chen Man (41) has made an official apology for a photo of a Chinese woman by luxury brand ‘Dior’, which caused a lot of controversy in China, British media BBC reported on the 24th (local time).

Recently, Chen Man wrote on his social platform Weibo, “I am blaming myself for the immaturity and ignorance revealed in my past works.”

Chen Man’s photo in question was criticized for revealing the prejudice that Westerners have toward Asian women. This photo was taken to an exhibition in Shanghai on the 12th, but disappeared after controversy.

Chinese media such as Beijing Daily also described Dior Chinese models as pale and evil eyes, saying, “From a Western perspective, Asian women are portrayed as having small eyes and freckles. We are responding to it,” he criticized.

China Women’s, run by the China Women’s Federation, said in an editorial that Dior’s photographer’s aesthetic taste was “too overdone” and that “it is intended to insult Chinese women and distort Chinese culture.”

According to the BBC, not all Chinese are critical of the work. Some Weibo users reported that they defended the author, saying, “Why can’t a Chinese woman with small eyes be considered beautiful?”

Earlier, on the 12th, Chen Man also expressed his apology, saying that he accepted the criticism that was being raised against his work. “As an artist, I am fully aware of my responsibility to document Chinese culture and showcase Chinese beauty through my works,” said Chen Man.
