Detroit ‍Tigers’ promising right-hander Jackson Jobe is set to undergo Tommy John surgery,⁣ the team announced Wednesday. This ⁢procedure will sideline the pitching prospect for the remainder of the ⁢2025 MLB season and a notable portion of 2026.

Jobe, 22, has been out sence late May with a strained flexor tendon in his elbow. The typical recovery for Tommy John surgery ranges from 12 to 18 months.

Drafted third overall in 2021,⁣ Jobe ‍entered the season as a highly-regarded pitching prospect. In 10 starts this year, he posted a 4.22 ERA with 39 strikeouts⁣ across ⁣49 innings. While his performance was not always optimal, ⁢his potential made him a valuable⁢ rotation piece behind Tarik Skubal. ⁢Sawyer ⁣Gibson-Long is expected to remain in the rotation⁣ with Jobe’s absence.

The Detroit Tigers may seek rotation ⁤depth before the July 31⁣ trade deadline, ⁢following the ⁤loss of⁣ Jobe. alex Cobb is currently on a minor-league rehab assignment. Jose Urquidy, recovering from Tommy John surgery performed in june 2024,recently threw a 20-pitch bullpen. reese Olson, dealing with⁤ a finger ‍issue, will soon throw a bullpen as well.

Despite this setback, the Tigers hold a 44-24 record, leading ‍the AL Central by eight games over the Minnesota Twins.

What’s next

the Tigers will look ‍to their existing pitching depth and potential trade acquisitions to compensate for Jobe’s absence as they continue their push for a playoff spot.
