Jaishankar Highlights India’s Strategic Partnership with Italy in Europe and the Mediterranean

Jaishankar Highlights India-Italy Relations in Rome
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India considers Italy a key partner in Europe and an influential player in the Mediterranean. He spoke during the inauguration of the new Chancery of the Embassy of India in Rome on November 24, 2024.
Jaishankar emphasized the frequent interactions between India and Italy, which reflect the strong ties between the two nations. He remarked, “The frequent interactions today we see at various levels are a sign of the depth and the breadth of our relationship with Italy.”
He expressed pride in inaugurating the new Chancery, noting it symbolizes the growth of their partnership. The new facility will also assist in better serving the Indian community in Italy.
India and Italy recently agreed on a five-year strategic action plan. This plan includes initiatives in defense, trade, clean energy, and connectivity. It aims to enhance bilateral engagement through ten key sectors, such as economic cooperation, energy transition, and people-to-people exchanges.
Jaishankar highlighted the shared history and culture between India and Italy. He pointed out that both countries are ancient civilizations with rich traditions. Their close maritime interests also strengthen their bond.
Speaking on the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Jaishankar called it a potential game changer for connectivity between Europe and Asia. He noted that India’s presence in Rome showcases its role in vital UN organizations like the FAO and the World Food Program.
Jaishankar also commended the Indian community in Italy for their contributions across various fields. He reaffirmed the Indian government’s commitment to their welfare and well-being.
In addition, Jaishankar is scheduled to participate in the 10th MED Mediterranean Dialogue in Rome.
