Jakarta to Host 80th Indonesian Independence Day Amidst Nusantara Capital Development

Jakarta, Indonesia – The 80th anniversary of Indonesian Independence, slated for august 17, 2025, will be centrally celebrated in Jakarta, a decision driven by the ongoing development of the nation’s new capital city, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka confirmed that the primary national ceremony will take place at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, as per the directive of President Prabowo Subianto.
Focus on Nusantara’s Construction Guides Festivity Location
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka articulated the rationale behind the decision, stating, “As stated by the state secretary minister, we will follow the president’s instructions. Moreover, IKN is still focused on construction.” This emphasis on the developmental phase of Nusantara underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing its completion.
Deputy minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro further elaborated on the matter, explaining that the ongoing construction of Nusantara necessitates the concentration of national efforts. “the construction of IKN is still ongoing,so we are focusing on completing its development first,” Ardiantoro remarked following a working meeting wiht commission XIII of the House of Representatives.
While the official commemoration will be held in Jakarta, a separate Independence Day ceremony will be organized at Nusantara by the nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN). However, the pivotal ceremony marking the Seconds to the Proclamation of Independence will be anchored in the nation’s current capital.
Organizational Preparations Underway
The institution of the 80th Independence Day celebration is actively progressing. Hasan Nasbi, head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), confirmed the formation of a dedicated committee by State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, with the PCO playing a meaningful role in the preparatory stages.
In parallel, the official launch of the theme and logo for the 80th Independence Day celebration, initially scheduled for Friday, July 18, has been rescheduled to Sunday, July 20. this unveiling will coincide with the car-free day event along the MH Thamrin-Sudirman streets in Jakarta, featuring the distribution of commemorative souvenirs and giveaways.
