Support for the family of James Van Der Beek continues to grow, with the GoFundMe established in his memory nearing $2.3 million in donations as of Friday morning. The fundraiser was launched following the actor’s death on Wednesday, February 11, after a battle with colorectal cancer.

Among the notable donors is director Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, who contributed $25,000 to the fund. This gesture carries particular resonance given Van Der Beek’s well-known admiration for Spielberg’s work, a recurring theme in his breakout role as Dawson Leery in the 1998-2003 teen drama, “Dawson’s Creek.”

“Dawson’s Creek” captivated a generation with its portrayal of four friends navigating adolescence in a small coastal town, grappling with universal themes of dreams, relationships, and the challenges of growing up. Van Der Beek’s character, an aspiring filmmaker, embodied the ambition and idealism of youth.

The GoFundMe campaign, which had garnered over 44,000 donations by Friday morning, aims to provide financial support to Van Der Beek’s wife and six children, who are facing an uncertain future in the wake of his passing. Funds will be used to cover essential living expenses, outstanding bills, and the children’s education, according to the fundraiser’s organizers.

Van Der Beek’s financial struggles were previously revealed in a 2012 interview, where he stated he received “almost nothing” in residuals from “Dawson’s Creek,” despite the show’s immense popularity. “There was no residual money,” he told Today. “I was 20. It was a bad contract. I saw almost nothing from that.”

Prior to his death, Van Der Beek actively sought ways to fund his cancer treatment, auctioning off personal memorabilia and collectibles. In September 2025, his former “Dawson’s Creek” co-stars organized a reunion fundraiser to benefit him and his family, an event he was unfortunately unable to attend due to illness. Actor Paul Walter Hauser also contributed to the fundraising efforts through Cameo videos and auctions.

In addition to Spielberg and Capshaw, other celebrities who have reportedly donated to the GoFundMe include Zoe Saldaña, Jon M. Chu, Derek Hough, Busy Philipps, and Jenna Dewan.

Tributes to Van Der Beek have poured in from his “Dawson’s Creek” colleagues and the wider entertainment industry. Kevin Williamson, the creator of “Dawson’s Creek,” expressed his profound sadness in an Instagram post on Thursday, stating, “Several times today, from my heart, I’ve tried to form the words to express the beautiful brilliance of James and what his presence has meant to my life… But I am truly at a loss for words.”

Katie Holmes shared a handwritten note on Instagram Wednesday, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to have worked alongside Van Der Beek. “Thank you,” she wrote. “To share a space with your imagination is sacred — breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each others’ hearts are safe in their expression.” She fondly recalled their shared “laughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs” and “adventures of a unique youth,” praising his “Bravery. Compassion. Selflessness [and] Strength.”

Other members of the “Dawson’s Creek” cast, including Chad Michael Murray, Kerr Smith, and Sasha Alexander, have also offered their condolences and paid tribute to Van Der Beek and his family online.

“James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed and i don’t know what else to say,” Busy Philipps wrote in an Instagram tribute. “He was my friend and i loved him and i’m so grateful for our friendship all these years.”
