Williams team principal James Vowles has highlighted the strong working relationship between drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz as a key factor in the team’s improved performance during the 2025 Formula 1 season. Speaking in an interview with Frankie Langan, Vowles praised both drivers for their professionalism, lack of ego and commitment to the team’s collective goals over individual accolades.

Albon has been with Williams since 2022, while Sainz joined the Grove-based team for the 2025 season after being replaced at Ferrari by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Despite joining mid-cycle, Sainz quickly integrated into the team, securing two podium finishes in Azerbaijan and Qatar – the first podiums achieved under Vowles’ leadership.

Vowles emphasized that the partnership between Albon and Sainz was effective from the outset, noting their collaboration during pre-season testing in Bahrain set a positive tone for the season. He stated that their working relationship remained consistently strong from “minute one” through to the end of the year, unaffected by the usual pressures that can influence driver dynamics within a team.

From the very, very first test that we did in Bahrain together, all the way through Melbourne where we see Carlos wasn’t in the car but able to help the team, all the way through other races where the two of them were working together very freely in terms of debrief data set-up direction, it’s been a relationship that actually from minute one was as strong as it was at the end of the season.

The team principal attributed the success of the driver pairing to their individual qualities as top-level sportsmen and their shared focus on Williams’ long-term objective of returning to the front of the grid. Vowles explained that neither driver became preoccupied with individual race results, instead prioritizing the team’s collective progress throughout the season.

It’s just a sign of both of them being absolutely top sportsmen in their own right. This is about our journey back to the front. We’re not getting caught up on who finished where at which race – it’s about how the team moves forward.

Vowles also noted that the constructive exchange of feedback between Albon and Sainz during race weekends and debriefs contributed significantly to the team’s development of the FW47 car. Their willingness to share setup insights and driving techniques helped Williams make consistent gains over the course of the championship.

The Williams FW47 showed measurable improvement in 2025, culminating in a fifth-place finish in the constructors’ championship – the team’s best result in a decade. Vowles cited the Albon-Sainz partnership as central to this advancement, particularly in how the drivers approached feedback and setup direction without internal competition undermining their collaboration.

Looking ahead, Vowles expressed confidence in the continued growth of the driver lineup, stating that the foundation of mutual respect and team-first mentality established in 2025 would support Williams’ ongoing development. He confirmed that there were no concerns regarding the driver pairing’s ability to maintain their effective working relationship moving into future seasons.
