TOKYO – Japan’s⁤ Billie Jean King ⁣Cup captain, Ai ⁣Sugiyama, is ⁤setting ‍her sights on guiding the team back to the tournament’s final round. Their journey begins in Tokyo⁢ with Group A of the qualification round, featuring a three-team contest starting Friday.

Last year saw Japan advance to the 12-team final round in ⁤Malaga,Spain. However, their run was cut short with a 2-1 ⁤loss in the ⁤quarter-finals to the eventual champion.

Japanese Team Eyes Return to Finals

Following the opening match between Canada and Romania on Friday, Japan⁤ is scheduled to face Romania on Saturday and Canada on Sunday.All matches will be held at the⁤ Ariake Colosseum.

A change in format for the qualification tournaments means each match now consists of two singles matches and one doubles match,a shift from the previous format of four singles and one doubles⁢ match.

“The new format⁣ has increased the importance ⁤of every game,” Sugiyama said at a press conference. Sugiyama is a former top-ranked Japanese player in both singles and doubles.

“This is also the first time we are playing in a group with three teams. It’s unachievable to predict⁤ the outcome. Our goal is to win as manny games, ⁤sets, and points as possible.”

Ena Shibahara secured the opening ⁤win in ‍last year’s quarter-final against Italy. However, ⁢Moyuka Uchijima lost the second singles match to Jasmine ⁢Paolini, than ranked No. 4 in the world. Shuko Aoyama⁣ and Eri Hozumi were also on the team.

“It was a disappointing experience,” Uchijima said.⁢ “I ⁤want to return ⁢to the final and win this time. I will do‍ my best in the qualification round to achieve that.”

Romania and Canada held separate press conferences⁢ as ⁣well.

Romania,⁣ after losing in the first round of the final round against Japan last⁢ year, has brought a younger ⁤team to tokyo. Three of their five players are participating ⁣in the team competition⁤ for the first time.

“We had⁤ a very ⁤good training‍ week,” said Anca Todoni, currently the highest-ranked⁤ player on the Romanian team at No.88. “We got to ⁢know each other ⁢better and worked well as a team. I am very positive about this weekend.”

Canada’s captain, ⁤Heidi El Tabakh, anticipates a challenging contest ⁢against Japan.

“(Aoi) Ito plays very‍ differently,and we will have to adjust if ‍she plays. ‍They also have a very⁣ good doubles team. It is indeed ‍a big challenge, but we are ready and eager to compete,” El Tabakh ‍said.

ito, 20, is ‍currently ranked ‍third among Japanese players‍ at No.104 in the world, behind Uchijima at ‍No. 51 and naomi Osaka at ⁢No. 56. She is known for her unconventional playing style.

Osaka, a former world No. 1 ⁣and ⁢four-time ⁣Grand Slam winner, will miss⁤ the qualification matches due⁣ to an⁣ abdominal injury.
