Disputed Territory and Diplomatic Protests

Military tensions have escalated in the East China Sea after China began constructing a natural gas extraction facility near the senkaku Islands, claimed by japan as part of its sovereign territory. Tokyo has lodged a diplomatic protest, viewing the move as a serious violation and preparing military defense measures should the situation deteriorate, according to reports from September 22, 2025.

China refers to the Senkaku Islands as Diaoyu and maintains they have been part of Chinese territory since the Ming Dynasty, a claim that has raised concerns in Tokyo.

Japanese Response and Accusations

The Japanese government has accused Beijing of “unilateral development” of gas fields in the disputed area and delivered “loud protests” to the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo. The Japanese Foreign Ministry stated, according to a report from Mizza, that it “regrettable that China continues to develop unilaterally in the East China Sea, while the Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEE) and continental shelf in the region have not yet been set.”

Military Mobilization

These developments follow reports that China has mobilized an aircraft carrier and four warships into the East China Sea, prompting Japan to scramble fighter jets.
