Tokyo, Japan – Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is poised for a significant victory in snap elections held today, February 8, 2026. Exit polls indicate the LDP will secure a majority in the Lower House, potentially exceeding two-thirds of the 465 seats, a result that would substantially strengthen the position of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The NHK public television broadcaster projected the LDP to win between 274 and 328 seats, surpassing the 233 needed for a majority. Combined with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), the ruling bloc is forecast to control between 302 and 366 seats. This represents a considerable increase from the pre-dissolution count of 230 seats held by the LDP-JIP coalition, plus three independents who typically sided with the government.

The election was called by Prime Minister Takaichi just three months after taking office, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to capitalize on her high public approval ratings and solidify her leadership. Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, assumed office in October 2025 and has since enjoyed consistently favorable polling numbers, reportedly exceeding 70 percent in some surveys.

Despite facing challenges including funding issues and recent scandals within the LDP, Takaichi’s leadership appears to have resonated with voters. Her style, described as both playful and assertive, has particularly appealed to younger demographics. The election took place amidst heightened tensions with China and ongoing economic concerns, issues that Takaichi has pledged to address with a focus on strengthening Japan’s economy and military capabilities, and fostering closer ties with the United States.

The scale of the projected victory could grant Takaichi considerable leeway in pursuing her right-wing agenda. Analysts suggest a substantial majority would allow her to accelerate planned reforms aimed at bolstering Japan’s defense posture and economic competitiveness. The outcome also signals a potential shift in the balance of power within the LDP itself, with some observers noting that Takaichi has effectively consolidated her authority over the party and its traditional power structures.

“Takaichi now has the LDP and the technocrats exactly where she always wanted them,” economist Jesper Koll commented in a recent Substack post. “The LDP is now beholden to her. and the elite technocrats now know she’ll be in power for at least two or three more years … so they have no choice but to invest their career in her success.”

Voting took place despite challenging weather conditions, with heavy snow falling in several parts of the country. Election officials worked through the inclement weather to ensure a smooth voting process and begin the task of counting ballots. Images from Osaka showed election staff meticulously counting votes, underscoring the importance placed on the integrity of the electoral process.

The outcome of the election is likely to have significant implications for Japan’s foreign policy. Takaichi has signaled her intention to strengthen Japan’s alliance with the United States, particularly in light of growing concerns about China’s assertiveness in the region. A stronger mandate could embolden her to take a more assertive stance on territorial disputes and security issues.

The victory also comes at a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region have underscored the importance of stability and security in East Asia. Japan, as a key US ally and a major economic power, plays a crucial role in maintaining regional stability.

While the full extent of the LDP’s victory remains to be confirmed as vote counting continues, the initial projections suggest a resounding endorsement of Prime Minister Takaichi’s leadership and a clear mandate for her policy agenda. The result is expected to have far-reaching consequences for Japan’s domestic and foreign policy for years to come.

The election results also come after a period of political instability, with the LDP having previously lost its majority in the Lower House. The snap election was seen as a gamble by Takaichi, but the outcome suggests that the gamble has paid off, solidifying her position as a dominant force in Japanese politics.
