Japan May Enter Ninth Wave of COVID-19 as Elderly Population at Higher Risk of Infection

TOKYO, June 26 – Experts in Japan are warning that the country may be entering its ninth wave of COVID-19, with a particular emphasis on the need to protect the elderly population who are at a higher risk of infection.

Mr. Shigeru Omi, President of the Japan Community Healthcare Foundation and government COVID advisor, held a meeting with Prime Minister Fumuo Kishida today to discuss the recent surge in new infections across the country. This increase comes after the government eased restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the virus. Following the meeting, Mr. Omi addressed the media, speculating that Japan has indeed entered its ninth wave of cases. He highlighted the expected rise in cases and urged those at high risk of severe illness to get vaccinated. Although uncertain about the possibility of surpassing the number of cases seen during the eighth wave, Mr. Omi stressed the importance of focusing on reducing the number of deaths by allowing social activities to continue.

The eighth wave of outbreaks in Japan occurred between late November 2022 and late January 2023, reaching its peak in early January with over 246,000 daily infections. However, by May, the number of cases had decreased to levels comparable to seasonal flu. The Ministry of Public Health has transitioned from reporting daily new infections to providing weekly average figures. The latest data released on Friday revealed an average of 5.60 new infections per health facility for the week ending June 18, indicating a slight increase from the previous week’s average of 5.11 new infections per health facility.

These developments underscore the need for continued vigilance in managing the COVID-19 situation in Japan.
