Japanese Reporters Give Negative Responses to Interview with Roki Sasaki

In interviews with Japanese reporters, most of the answers were negative in short form.
“It’s impressive to see Park Se-woong fight with a fastball from the first pitch,” said fighting back Rocky Sasaki

(Itoman[일본 오키나와현]= Yonhap News) Correspondent Dae-ho Lee = The game between professional baseball Lotte Giants and Japanese professional baseball Chibar Lotte Marines held at Itoman Nishizaki Stadium in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan on the 25th attracted great interest due to the appearance of Chibar Pitcher fast Lotte Roki Sasaki (22, Japan).

Before this season, he had a conflict with the club about whether he should challenge for the American Major League Baseball (MLB) early, and was late in preparing for the season, including being the last to complete salary negotiations.

Sashiki’s starting pitch against Lotte that day was his first true pitching appearance of the 2024 season.

Sasaki, who hit a top speed of 155 km/h despite throwing lightly, left the mound after pitching just one inning.

Korean and Japanese reporters flocked to Nishizaki Stadium to watch Sasaki pitch, and Korean reporters asked Sasaki’s team, Chiba Lotte, and its “brother club,” Lotte, if they could interview Sasaki.

Accordingly, Lotte Club said, ‘As a result of an inquiry with Chiba Lotte Club, we received an answer that Sasaki would be interviewed by Japanese reporters, and that Korean reporters would record the interview and transmit it through a translator.’

The problem was that Sasaki could not even be seen being interviewed by Japanese media.

As I approached the area to watch the interview, even from a distance, a team official asked for my understanding, saying, “I think (Sasaki) would be uncomfortable with Korean reporters watching.”

Chiba Lotte was concerned about going against Sasaki’s wishes.

The interview area was closed to general visitors, so there was no concern about security incidents occurring due to the crowds.

It was a scene that gave a glimpse into Sasaki’s tendency to be sensitive even to Japanese reporters.

After that, most of Sasaki’s comments about the game received by the Lotte team were in the form of short answers.

Asked by a Japanese reporter if he had any tasks set for his season debut, Sasaki replied, “I haven’t set anything. I confirmed what I can do and what I can’t do.”

The meaning of the game that day was, “It wasn’t as bad as I thought. It was good that I played without being nervous.”

As for Lotte’s Park Se-woong, who competed as the starting pitcher, he said, “It was impressive that he competed with a fastball from the start,” and when asked about the content of his conversation with Chiba Lotte coach Masato Yoshii , he said, “I didn’t say anything specific.”

Roki Sasaki finished the inning with no runs allowed.

The Japanese translator who translated Sasaki’s interview into Korean said, “Sasaki answered most of the Japanese reporter’s questions negatively and in short answers.”

Sasaki is a fastball pitcher who threw 165 km/h, the top speed in last year’s NPB.

In the match against Orix Buffaloes on April 10, 2022, he completed a perfect game after 20 years and 157 days, the youngest in NPB history.
