Buenos Aires residents and international visitors gain a new cultural feature as the Jardín Japonés in the Palermo neighborhood opens the Camino de la Longevidad, a dedicated pathway featuring 16 traditional Japanese gates, clarin.com reported. The installation invites visitors to slow down and reflect on universal values such as simplicity, honesty, and trust while walking toward the main entrance.

Opening the Path of Long Life on Avenida Casares

The Jardín Japonés installed 16 typical torii portals along Avenida Casares at 3500 to guide visitors through a conscious walking experience, clarin.com reported. Each of the 16 torii represents a core value. The trail guides pedestrians directly to the Shureimon, a traditional Okinawan gateway guarded by two shisa lion-dog statues. Approximately 80 percent of the Japanese community currently living in Argentina traces its roots back to Okinawa.

In Japanese tradition, a torii marks a transitional threshold between physical spaces, such as crossing from the profane to the sacred at a temple entrance. Representatives from the Jardín Japonés explain that the new pathway encourages visitors to lower their pace and connect with nature. If one recorre ese camino conectándose con la naturaleza y los valores expuestos, que son universales; si baja el ritmo, si presta atención a sí mismo, su cuerpo, sus deseos, va por buen camino en ese sentido, administrators stated, according to clarin.com.

Tracing the History of the Palermo Landmark

The historical park originated in 1967 when the local Japanese community donated the recreation and meditation space to the City of Buenos Aires during a visit by the princes Akihito and Michiko, later emperors, clarin.com reported. After a period of neglect, the property officially reopened in 1979. Because Japanese landscapes feature mountainous terrain while the Buenos Aires site sat on flat land, organizers imported 18 tons of stones from the province of Córdoba.

The grounds also house cherry trees that bloom during the annual winter sakura festival, alongside vegetation grown from trees that survived the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima. The Fundación Argentino Japonesa notes that the park’s arrangement of stones symbolizes permanence and silence. Three distinct red bridges span the ponds, including the curved Taiko Bashi bridge representing the spiritual ascent from earth to heaven, and the zigzagging Yatsu Bashi bridge designed for contemplation of changing perspectives.

Visiting Hours and Admission Fees for the Gardens

The Camino de la Longevidad is open to the public at no additional charge, while general admission to the Jardín Japonés costs 8,000 pesos, according to clarin.com. Entrance fees are waived entirely for children under 12 years of age and adults over 65. Park officials recommend visiting on weekdays to avoid larger crowds and to fully experience the tranquil atmosphere among the pagodas, lanterns, and origami displays.
