After nine ⁢seasons on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” Jason Segel sought to expand ⁢his acting repertoire beyond comedy. However, Segel said he encountered resistance when he tried to pursue dramatic roles.

Segel, speaking at The Hollywood Reporter’s Comedy Actor Roundtable, said that after a decade of ⁤sitcoms and romantic ⁤comedies,he wanted to explore ⁤dramatic acting. “I thought, ‘Look out world. Here comes me doing drama.’ And it turns out nobody gives a shit,” Segel said.

His 2015‍ portrayal of ⁢David Foster Wallace in “The End of the Tour” garnered critical acclaim. Vanity ‍Fair’s Richard Lawson noted ⁣Segel’s “remarkable dexterity” in capturing Wallace’s complex speech, showcasing the novelist’s “brilliant, troubled ⁤mind.”

segel said that “The End of the Tour” was a turning point. “I wanted to⁤ do something diffrent. I needed to make a change. If I’m going to do this for 50 more years, it ⁣has to be reflective of what I’m feeling.”

Reflecting on the ⁣experience, Segel said, “Nobody saw [the movie] but I⁣ felt like, ‘You ⁣can do it.’ And⁣ so that was critically important‍ for me, as I didn’t want to be the guy who sat his whole life wondering if he could do something.”

According to Segel,James Ponsoldt, who directed “The End of the tour,” observed⁢ that Segel seemed unhappy doing comedy. Ted Danson added that many comedians possess a deep-seated sadness.

Segel, who now lives in Ojai, California, said ⁤a freind of “Shrinking” producer Bill lawrence saw him in town and suggested⁤ they ‍work together, noting Segel seemed happy.

Segel said he now prefers projects that ⁣blend ⁤comedy and drama, citing James L. Brooks as ⁣”the king” of this approach. He appreciates Brooks’ films for portraying the complexities⁤ of life, where “there aren’t heroes and villains, and you ⁤cry through the funny stuff and laugh through the tough stuff.”

What’s next

Segel is expected to‍ continue seeking roles‍ that allow him ⁤to ⁢explore both his comedic and‍ dramatic talents, aiming for projects that reflect the nuances of ‍real life.
