President Javier Milei has called for patience from the Argentinian public as his administration navigates a difficult first quarter of 2026, characterized by slowing economic growth and declining approval ratings.

The president acknowledged the challenges of the current period but anticipated an economic improvement beginning in April 2026. This rare admission of economic difficulty comes amid a worsening outlook for the blue-chip swap rate and a shift in the president’s tone toward humility.

Economic Performance and Social Impact

Since taking office after the 2023 elections, Milei has implemented extensive liberalizing reforms, which include the reduction of government spending, subsidies, and economic regulations. These measures were designed to lower the government’s budget deficit and curb price inflation.

While these reforms initially led to an increase in public confidence and economic growth, the social cost has been significant. By March 7, 2026, the official poverty rate reached 52.9 percent, the highest level in two decades, compared to 41.7 percent at the start of Milei’s term.
