Jay Wheeler Celebrates Abuela’s Influence with McDonald’s Collaboration
Reggaeton artist Jay Wheeler is partnering with McDonald’s to promote their new “Grandma McFlurry,” a collaboration that allows him to honor his grandmother, clara Luz, a pivotal figure in his life and career. Wheeler, known for his brand of “romantiqueo,” covered the classic song “Cinnamon Skin” as part of the campaign,a tune he associates strongly with his abuela.
Wheeler acknowledges the profound impact his grandmother has had on his values and artistry. He credits her with teaching him respect, empathy, and a strong belief in God. Her passion for music and dance ignited his own aspirations from a young age. “One of the most gorgeous treasures I have in my life is my abuela,” Wheeler said. “She’s a person that loves to go out, who loves to party, and I’m lucky to still have her with me and have her healthy.”
The McDonald’s collaboration provided an opportunity for Wheeler and his grandmother to film a commercial together, showcasing the new McFlurry and a related TikTok competition. This marks a moment in the limelight for Clara Luz, who always harbored dreams of performing.
Wheeler expressed initial nervousness about covering “Cinnamon Skin,” recognizing its status as a timeless classic. ”I was actually really nervous because I know it’s a classic, that it’s something that you don’t want to mess up,” he said. “So, my intention was never to make a better version or anything like that. My intention was just to make my version of a classic song — one that reminds me of my grandmother.”
Wheeler recalled childhood memories of singing and dancing with his grandmother, highlighting her enduring influence. He noted that she “always wanted to be a singer…and that inspired me. From a very young age, she instilled [that desire] in me. And she always wanted to be famous,” Wheeler said.
