US Vice President JD Vance defended an explosive $4 million campaign advertisement by Republican Vivek Ramaswamy attacking his Democratic rival in the Ohio governor’s race, Reuters reported on October 21, 2026. The commercial features Democrat Amy Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur, who disputes her daughter’s childhood account of homelessness and sexual abuse.
Vance Defends Ramaswamy Advertisement in Ohio
Vance brushed aside mounting criticism of the spot during a campaign event at the Sharonville Convention Center in Sharonville, Ohio, on October 21, 2026. Campaigning alongside Ramaswamy and Republican US Senator Jon Husted, Vance urged voters to look past the political controversy.

Vance added that voters should focus on the substance and facts of the race rather than the advertisements themselves. Ramaswamy’s campaign originally published the spot on social media on Tuesday without identifying its source before confirming its backing and spending $4 million to promote it.
Acton Childhood Account Disputed by Estranged Mother
The ad centers on Donna Arthur urging Ohioans not to vote for Acton while challenging her account of childhood homelessness and abuse. Acton has stated publicly that she was sexually abused by her stepfather when she was 12 years old, adding that her mother stayed with the man, who was charged with rape, fled the state, and died in 2004 without standing trial.

Acton has said she has not seen her mother since 1978. Acton’s brother, Philip Stearns, has publicly supported her account while condemning the campaign spot as a desperate and disgusting attack.
We don’t know what happened between Amy and her mother … but we know that Amy Acton is a serial fabulist.

Acton campaign spokesperson Addie Bullock called the decision to promote the advertisement both despicable and entirely predictable. Opinion polls show Acton holding a narrow lead over Ramaswamy in the gubernatorial contest.
Midterm Election Backlash Threatens Republican Candidates
Political analysts warn that the attack ad could backfire on Ramaswamy and other Republican candidates in Ohio. David Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Akron, characterized the move as campaign malpractice that could alienate voters.
Cohen stated that the controversy may cause some people to switch parties or stay home on Election Day. The backlash also creates complications for Jon Husted, who stated that he would not have run the advertisement and who is currently trailing Democrat Sherrod Brown in a race that will help determine control of the US Senate.
Voters Decide Control in November Midterms
The campaign clash highlights rising tensions ahead of the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. Both the Ohio gubernatorial race and the concurrent Senate contest will help determine the balance of power, as analysts monitor whether the ad’s fallout alters voter turnout in a state that has moved to the right during the Trump years.
