(AP) — Vice President JD Vance, a figure embodying the political movement aiming to represent what some call “forgotten america,” notably its white electorate, traces his roots to eastern Kentucky’s Appalachian region, despite growing up in Ohio’s Rust Belt. His ascent ⁤to national office has ignited a⁣ sense of pride and anticipation among residents of this historically impoverished and geographically isolated ‍area, who are hopeful for‍ potential economic revitalization.

Jessica Ellis, a Donald Trump voter ‍residing⁢ a few miles from her grandparents’ former home and family cemetery in the winding, vegetation-covered valleys of Kentucky, expressed the‍ prevailing sentiment. “he understands the situation here,” Ellis said. “He will be able to help this region in a way that we cannot even imagine.”

From Hillbilly Elegy to Washington Voice

In downtown Jackson, a grocery store window displays a “trump, Save america Again” flag. Store owner Kenneth Patrick hopes Vance’s position can⁢ bring factories⁤ back to the county. “He may help us bring back factories here in the Breathitt county, I hope,” ‍Patrick said. “We need to grow, we are becoming a ghost village and it is frightening.”

Stephen Bowling, director of ⁢the County Public Library, sees Vance as a potential advocate for the region’s interests in Washington.”For generations, others have been allowed to write ‍our history,” Bowling said. “People came to the mountains for extractivist economic practices. They took the coal and then left, they took the wood and then left, as for salt. All this has withdrawn power, economic ⁤stability and wealth, so ‍now the possibility of having a voice⁣ in Washington is critically important for the inhabitants.”
