Jeju United (Jeju) defeated Cheonan City FC and advanced to the round of 16 of the Korea Cup.

In the third round (round of 24) of the 2024 Hana Bank Korea Cup against Cheonan FC held at Jeju World Cup Stadium at 7 p.m. on the 17th, Jeju was unable to decide the winner by drawing 2-2 despite a fierce battle that went into overtime.

However, they won 4-3 in the subsequent penalty shootout and secured a ticket to the round of 16. Jeju will play the away round of 16 against Daejeon Hana Citizen on June 19th.

The game, which was tense, was broken by Jeju in the 22nd minute of the second half. Jin Seong-wook was awarded a penalty kick when he fell after being tackled by an opposing player in the penalty box, and Hayes completed the game easily, successfully securing the first goal.

Afterwards, Jeju blocked Cheonan FC’s wave of attacks, and the game seemed like it would end like this, but Yong-ho Yoon scored an equalizer in the last minute, sending it to overtime.

Jeju looked anxious in overtime, conceding a come-from-behind goal to Cheonan FC, but Kim Jung-min’s surprise mid-range shot balanced the score at 2-2 and confirmed victory in a penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper Ahn Chan-ki, who made his Jeju debut on this day, made a brilliant save to block shots from Cheonan FC’s third kicker Shin Hyeong-min and fourth kicker Koo Dae-young, giving Jeju a ticket to the round of 16 of the Korea Cup.

Coach Kim Hak-beom said after the game, “As expected, the Korea Cup is not an easy stage. It was definitely disappointing that the team went into overtime and then a penalty shootout ahead of the weekend away game in the league, but I think the players showed their potential until the end. “These aspects will definitely help the team,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jeju, who succeeded in turning around the atmosphere immediately after overcoming the previous loss against Sangmu in Gimcheon with this victory, will begin to accumulate points against Suwon FC in the league away game at 2 pm on the 20th, which is the weekend.
