Jeju Island Hit by Heavy Rain and Strong Winds on Children’s Day, Flights Cancelled

On the 5th, Children’s Day, a strong wind warning and a heavy rain warning were in effect on Jeju Island, and heavy rain amounting to “water bombs” of over 900 mm fell in mountainous areas.

As of 9 p.m., a heavy rain warning is in effect for the mountainous and mid-mountainous regions of Jeju Island, while a heavy rain warning is in effect for the western, southern and eastern regions of Jeju Island Jeju.

Heavy rain fell that day at a rate of between 30 and 50 mm per hour in the mid-mountain areas and above, and between 10 and 30 mm per hour in other areas.

Considering the rainfall at 9pm, as much as 911mm of rain fell in Samgakbong, 898mm in the azalea field, 712mm in Witse Oreum and 709mm in Yeongsil.

Heavy rainfall also continued in mid-mountain areas, including Geumak 178 mm, Gasiri 165 mm, Seogwang 161 mm and Yusuam 154 mm.

In coastal areas, heavy rain fell mainly in western and southern regions, including 103 mm in Hwasun, 102 mm in Hallim, 99 mm in Nakcheon, 80 mm in Daejeong and 80 mm in Seoho-dong.

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that the rain will continue until the early morning hours of the 6th (03-06) and then gradually stop.

Meanwhile, a high wind warning (strong wind advisory for mountainous areas) was issued on Jeju Island this day and strong winds blew, leading to a series of flight cancellations and delays at Jeju International Airport .

As of 8pm, around 70 departing and arriving flights had been cancelled. Additionally, an estimated 250 flights were delayed. <헤드라인제주>
