Jennifer Coolidge is officially returning as real estate agent Karen Calhoun in the second season of Netflix’s thriller series The Watcher. The hit show, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, is finally heading into production in New York this autumn after being renewed by the streaming platform back in November 2022. Securing the actor is a genuine coup for the platform, as her profile has surged following her work on The White Lotus and her recent appearance in A Minecraft Movie.
Jennifer Coolidge Reprises Her Role as Karen Calhoun
The series will see the return of the character described as that kind of Karen,
who originally convinced the Brannock family to overpay for their property at 657 Boulevard. By the conclusion of the first season, she had taken possession of the house herself, only to find she was the new target of the same paranoia she had previously profited from. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly shortly after the renewal, Coolidge stated that she thought Karen needs to be punished
for her actions in the first installment.
Naomi Watts Returns as Nora Brannock for Season Two
The returning cast includes Naomi Watts as Nora Brannock, Bobby Cannavale as Dean Brannock, Margo Martindale as Maureen “Mo,” and Isabel Gravitt as Ellie Brannock. Watts has also taken on an executive producer role for the second season. The cast also featured Luke David Blumm as Carter Brannock during the first season.
Production on the new season is slated to begin in New York this fall. The delay between the initial November 2022 renewal and the upcoming production start had left the project in a lengthy turnaround, with Ryan Murphy previously confirming the show would not return in 2024. The series is based on Reeves Wiedeman’s New York Magazine article titled The Haunting of a Dream House.
Behind the Scenes and Global Streaming Impact
Crystle Roberson Dorsey is attached to direct and executive produce the second season.
Executive producers for the second season include Murphy, Brennan, Dorsey, Nissa Diederich, Karl Frankenfield, Scott Robertson, Todd Kubrak, Tanase Popa, Watts, Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman, Eric Newman, Bryan Unkeless, and Max Winkler.
Netflix Explores Sinister Secrets in Second Season
While Netflix confirmed the return of the primary Brannock family members and Coolidge, other season one favorites such as Mia Farrow, Richard Kind, and Christopher McDonald have not yet been confirmed to return. Netflix has also not released an official logline detailing the specific plot of the second season, though the show will continue to explore the neighborhood’s sinister secrets. The first season was a significant success for the streamer, spending five weeks on the Global Top 10 English TV list and reaching the Top 10 in more than 90 countries.
