CBS to Maintain Distribution Role for ‘Wheel’ and‍ ‘Jeopardy!’

Updated May 29, 2025

CBS has won a ruling in ‌its legal dispute with Sony⁣ Pictures Television, ‌allowing the network to continue its distribution role for “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” while the case proceeds. Sony, which ‍owns and produces the shows in Culver City, is in a contract fight with CBS over distribution rights.

Last month, a Los angeles judge⁤ initially ruled sony⁢ was no longer obligated to provide episodes to CBS, which has distributed the shows to stations nationwide‍ for decades. The Paramount Global-owned network appealed, and a three-judge panel temporarily blocked the order, requesting arguments from both sides.

The judges, after reviewing filings, granted CBS’s request to maintain the‍ stay, enabling the network to continue its distribution duties during the appeal. CBS argues Sony lacks the legal right to unilaterally end their distribution agreement.

Sony ended ‌its distribution‌ deal with CBS in August and subsequently filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit. Sony alleged CBS engaged in unauthorized licensing ⁣deals and then paid itself a commission.the company also claimed budget cuts within CBS hindered support for the two shows.Sony attempted to cut CBS out of⁤ the picture in February, escalating the dispute over the distribution role.

CBS contends that Sony’s claims are based on dissatisfaction⁢ with the original agreement⁢ made years ago. The network receives up to 40%‌ of the fees paid by TV stations to air the shows. ‍CBS assumed distribution responsibilities after acquiring King World Productions in 1999. King World had agreements with Merv Griffin Enterprises, the original producer, in the early 1980s to distribute ⁣”Jeopardy!” and “Wheel.” Sony later acquired Griffin’s company, but the original agreements remain valid.

Despite declining‍ viewership of conventional TV due to streaming competition, the ⁣two⁤ game shows remain highly popular ⁣and are among television’s most-watched programs. The legal battle ⁢highlights the importance of these programs and the lucrative distribution role.

What’s next

The legal battle between CBS and Sony Pictures Television is ongoing, with both companies preparing for the next phase of the appeal process. The court’s decision will determine the future⁣ distribution role for ‍”Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!”
