Jessica Simpson Returns to Music with New EP After Personal Turmoil
Jessica Simpson, the iconic singer and fashion mogul, is making a triumphant return to the music scene with her new EP, Nashville Canyon: Part 1, set to release this week. The EP marks her first musical endeavor in 15 years, and it comes at a time of significant personal upheaval for the star.
In an exclusive interview with a prominent entertainment magazine, Simpson shared the emotional journey behind her new music. “I got thrown a real twist of fate in the middle of making this record,” she revealed. “My heart was completely broken. I had to continue to focus on the music. Thank God, I had Nashville.”
In January, Simpson and her husband of 10 years, Eric Johnson, announced their separation. The couple, who share three children—Maxwell, 12, Ace, 11, and Birdie, 5—have been navigating a painful situation in their marriage. “Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson said in a statement. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them.”
Simpson found solace and healing through her music, which she began working on in Nashville in the fall of 2023. “Having this creative outlet, it’s like your heart breaks and you go into a songwriting session – like going straight into therapy,” she reflected. “I have always said it was cheesy when people said the music saved my life but it truly saved mine.”
The new EP features five soul and rockabilly-infused tunes, with the first single, “Use My Heart Against Me,” already released. Simpson described the process of writing the song as cathartic. “It was a sexy song to write,” she told the magazine. “I had a lot of stuff written in my journals — stuff that I screengrabbed on my phone and would just give to my co-writers and they wove it together.”
This EP is Simpson’s most personal work yet. “I’d never be able to come back to music if I didn’t come at it from a soulful place. I knew for me, it was connecting to my roots,” she said. The EP, which will be released on March 21, is a testament to her resilience and artistic growth.
Simpson’s return to music comes after a long hiatus from the industry. She has been focusing on her fashion ventures and family life. However, the storytelling aspect of music has always been her passion. “The storytelling side of music is really what I gravitate towards the most. The songs speak for themselves. The music really does the talking,” she said.
Simpson’s journey serves as an inspiration for many, especially those who have faced personal challenges. Her ability to channel her pain into music is a testament to the healing power of creativity. As she continues to navigate her personal life, her music remains a beacon of hope and resilience.
