Brisbane: England captain Joe Root has set a new record in the first Ashes Test against Australia. Root holds the record for most runs in a calendar year in Tests for England.

Root set the record on the third day of the Test against Australia. So far, the record has been held by former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Vaughn scored 1481 runs in a calendar year. The player achieved this feat in 2002. Root, however, scored 86 not out in the match against Australia, taking his tally to 1541. Root averaged 67 runs in 25 innings with six centuries.
