Updated June 04, 2025
Jonathan Joss, 59, best known for his roles in “Parks and Recreation” and “King of the Hill,” died Sunday in a san Antonio, Texas, shooting. Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, 56, faces a murder charge in connection with the incident.
Tristan Kern de Gonzales, Joss’s husband, described the actor’s final moments, alleging that ceja used a homophobic slur during the attack. Gonzales told The Autonomous that Ceja “cackled” as Joss lay dying. He claims Ceja said, “Oh, you love him? Joto,” using a Spanish slur against gay people.
According to Gonzales, the shooting occurred after Joss confronted Ceja about a dog’s skull placed on thier mailbox. The skull belonged to a dog that died in a house fire. Gonzales said Ceja responded with violent, homophobic slurs before opening fire.

Gonzales recounted holding Joss after the shooting. “I held his face together while I told him how much I loved him,” Gonzales said, adding that Joss tried to say “I love you” before dying at the scene.
San Antonio police reported that Ceja confessed to the murder immediately, stating, “I shot him.”
Despite Gonzales’s assertion that anti-LGBT+ sentiment fueled the crime, police stated that ”there is no evidence Joss’ murder was related to his sexual orientation.” they added that they take such allegations seriously and will charge the suspect accordingly if new evidence emerges.

Authorities acknowledged responding to over 40 calls involving Joss last year, including welfare checks and disputes with neighbors. Gonzales attributed these incidents to Joss’s mental health issues, emphasizing that he was never violent. He also stated that the couple faced racist and homophobic attacks in their neighborhood.
Gonzales is now planning Joss’s funeral and focusing on “protecting Jonathan’s legacy and honouring the life we built together.”
‘While I’m holding him, he has the gun pointed over me, and he’s laughing, saying, “Oh, you love him? Joto”.’
‘I held his face together while I told him how much I loved him…He could still hear me, he looked up at me and he wasn’t able to talk because of the extent [of his injuries], but I could tell he was trying to say, “I love you”.’
