Updated June 04, 2025
Jony Ive, renowned for his decades-long influence on Apple’s iconic designs, including the iPhone and iMac, is now collaborating with OpenAI to develop a consumer-facing AI device. this venture has garnered support from Laurene Powell Jobs, a long-time admirer and investor in Ive’s work.
Powell Jobs expressed her enthusiasm for Ive’s latest endeavor, stating she was “just watching something brand new be manifested, it’s a wondrous thing to behold.” she has maintained close ties with Ive since his tenure at Apple and has invested in his design firm, LoveFrom. LoveFrom’s spinout, io, was acquired by OpenAI in a $6.4 billion deal, merging their expertise to create innovative AI technology consumer products.
According to reports, OpenAI plans to launch this groundbreaking AI device next year. Ive, while remaining independent, will lead the creative and design direction. Discussions between Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding AI hardware began in 2023, leading to the formation of io later that year. The acquisition is expected to make Ive a billionaire and grant Powell Jobs a substantial stake in OpenAI.

“LoveFrom wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Laurene. It feels to me like we grew up together,” Ive told the Financial Times.
Ive and Powell Jobs have maintained a close relationship since Steve Jobs’s death in 2011.Powell Jobs’s investment platform, Emerson Collective, has also supported LoveFrom. despite her involvement with Ive’s OpenAI project, Powell jobs remains connected to Apple.”I’m still very close to the leadership team at Apple,” she said.
The specifics of OpenAI’s project remain confidential, but Ive and Altman have indicated that the device will not be another smartphone. Ive aims to create a product that addresses the unhealthy relationships people often have with their devices, acknowledging his role in shaping this dynamic. “While some of the less positive consequences where unintentional, I still feel duty,” he said.
“Many of us would say we have an uneasy relationship with technology at the moment. Humanity deserves better,” said Ive.
What’s next
through their collaboration with OpenAI, Ive and Powell Jobs hope to foster a more positive and human-centered approach to technology, addressing concerns about mental health and the impact of technology on young people.
