OpenAI has tapped former Apple design chief Jony ive and his firm LoveFrom to spearhead creative and design initiatives. The partnership will see Ive shaping the future look and feel of OpenAI’s AI products,including the popular chatbot chatgpt.
Ive, who spent nearly three decades at Apple, is credited with designing iconic products such as the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Apple Watch. His minimalist design philosophy helped propel Apple to become one of the world’s moast valuable companies.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his enthusiasm on X,formerly Twitter,calling Ive “the greatest designer in the world.” He also shared a promotional video highlighting the relationship between Ive and Altman.
After leaving Apple in 2019, Ive founded LoveFrom, which has since collaborated with companies like Ferrari, Airbnb, and Moncler.
The structure of the OpenAI-Ive deal involves OpenAI acquiring Ive’s company “io” in an all-equity transaction valued at $6.5 billion. Ive established io last year with the goal of designing and developing AI-powered products. The approximately 55 engineers,scientists,researchers,physicists,and product progress specialists at io will transition to OpenAI.
