Phillies’ Alvarado Suspended⁤ 80 Games for PED Violation

PHILADELPHIA ⁤(AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies received a significant setback Sunday as reliever José Alvarado was suspended 80 games without pay by Major League Baseball after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The suspension renders Alvarado ineligible for postseason play, a blow ⁢to the Phillies’ aspirations for a World Series title.

Team Reacts to Alvarado’s Suspension

In a statement released Sunday, the Phillies organization expressed its disappointment.⁤ “The ‍Phillies fully support Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention⁣ and Treatment Program, ‍and we are disappointed by the news regarding José,” the statement read.

Alvarado, who tested positive for exogenous testosterone, was unavailable for‍ comment and had already⁣ departed Philadelphia.His agent declined to comment.

Manager Downplays Impact, Looks Ahead

“We have to move on,” Phillies manager rob Thomson said. “It’s a shame, but we have to ⁢move forward. We have capable players who can fill the void.”

Losing Alvarado,arguably their most consistent and dominant reliever,presents a considerable challenge. He⁤ boasts a 4-1 record with a 2.70 ERA and seven saves in 20 appearances this season. According to fangraphs, his 0.8 WAR is tied for third among Phillies relievers.

While acknowledging ⁤the difficulty in replacing Alvarado, the Phillies must find a way to compensate for his absence.

“I’ve seen teams overcome injuries and postseason losses to win the⁣ World Series,” ⁤Dombrowski stated. “It’s not ideal, but you have ‍to deal with it.”

Roster Moves ⁣and Bullpen Adjustments

The Phillies activated right-hander José Ruiz from the 15-day injured list to take Alvarado’s spot on the 26-man roster. Following Sunday’s⁤ game against the Pirates, pitching‍ prospect Mick Abel was optioned to Triple-A after his MLB debut.

In the immediate future, the⁤ phillies will ⁣rely more heavily on right-handers Jordan Romano and Orion Kerkering, along with left-hander Matt Strahm. Tanner Banks is ⁣the only other left-hander currently in the bullpen.

Trade Deadline Implications

Alvarado’s suspension increases the pressure on the Phillies’ front office to acquire ⁣a dominant reliever before the July 31 trade deadline. The team was already expected⁣ to pursue bullpen upgrades due to inconsistent performance this season.

“There is still time for‍ that,” Dombrowski noted, referring to potential acquisitions.

No Plans to Shift Starters⁢ to ⁤Bullpen

The Phillies are not considering⁣ moving left-hander Ranger Suárez to the bullpen, at least in the short term. similarly,there are⁢ no plans to use Andrew Painter‍ as a reliever.

Though, Dombrowski suggested that options could be re-evaluated during the postseason, potentially including Suárez, Cristopher Sánchez, or ⁤even abel.

“It ‍is indeed probably easier to handle‍ in the ⁤postseason as you have openers that can become relievers,” Dombrowski explained. “We have an abundance of openers, which is a good starting ⁤point. how that will affect the decisions we make, I suppose that ⁤will⁢ be seen⁢ more over time.”

Alvarado’s Clarification

Dombrowski said Alvarado tested positive some time ago but had two subsequent negative tests.He frist heard rumors of a possible suspension over a ⁣week ago while the Phillies were in Tampa.

He learned Sunday morning that Alvarado had accepted the suspension without appeal.

The Phillies held a team meeting two‍ hours before Sunday’s game against the Pirates to discuss the situation.

Dombrowski relayed that⁤ Alvarado told him, “It is not something that I knew.”⁤ Dombrowski added, “I believe him, as of the way⁣ he spoke to me.”

According to Dombrowski, Alvarado took a substance to help⁢ him lose weight. “He has always been worried about his weight, working hard ⁢on it, and something‍ he took gave a positive result,” Dombrowski said.

alvarado arrived at spring training noticeably thinner. he is in⁢ the final year of a three-year, $22⁤ million contract and has a $9 million club option⁣ for 2026.

“but ultimately,” dombrowski concluded, “you are still responsible for what happened… the system is very rigorous.‍ You are responsible for what enters your‍ body.”

The Phillies now face the challenge of moving forward ⁤without a key member of their bullpen.

“It’s not a⁤ good thing,” Dombrowski reiterated. “It is indeed ⁣not the news that you want to hear in any way, but‍ I want to keep it in perspective.⁢ We have dealt with other injuries,other situations in which you still ⁤have a very good club and manage to overcome them and win. And usually the clubs that win the World ⁤Series exceed something.”
