Jose Mourinho to Korean National Team: A Vain Hope?

[마이데일리 = 최용재 기자]It is a vain hope. It is almost impossible for coach Jose Mourinho to join the Korean national team.

Coach Mourinho, who resigned as coach of Italian Serie A side AS Roma, expressed his desire to be in charge of the national team. Then, they hook him up with the Korean national team, which happens to be a ‘vacant’ job. The Korean national team has Son Heung-min, who was a former student at Tottenham in England and whom he always admired and cherished. It is said to be a chance to reunite with Son Heung-min. It’s also an opportunity to train Kim Min-jae, who spoke strongly when he said he wanted to recruit him during his time as Tottenham coach.

Coach Mourinho. One of the world’s greatest masters. The Special One, who won the trophy with every team he went to, including Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, and AS Roma, except Tottenham. If a great player like this joined the Korean national team, would he refuse? We should welcome it with open arms. The best coach in the history of Korean football is coming.

But, will Coach Mourinho come to Korea? Of course, we cannot guarantee that it is 100% impossible. People don’t know what to do. However, it is fair to say that it is almost impossible.

Realistically, the Korean national team cannot afford to treat Coach Mourinho. Ultimately, it’s money. You can’t bring in the best general in the world without money. This is something that goes beyond the laws of capitalism and the professional world.

The annual salary of recently fired coach Jürgen Klinsmann is known to be around $2.2 million (2.9 billion won). How much is Mourinho’s manager paid? He received 15 million pounds (25.5 billion won) during his time at Tottenham. Even AS Roma, who are in a bad financial situation, are said to have received more than 7 million euros (10.1 billion won). During his time at Manchester United, he received 28 million euros (40.7 billion won), placing him first in salary as a football coach in the world.

Coach Mourinho’s respective annual salary is estimated to be around 25 billion won. If you come to Asia, you have to pay more. Will Korea, who pay their national team coach an annual salary of 2.9 billion won, be able to pay Coach Mourinho’s salary? How much can you cut?

And it is linked to the ‘honour’ of the director, which is perhaps more important than money. To put it bluntly, the world’s best masters do not come to Asia. When they decide that they are no longer competitive on the best stage in Europe or the strongest national team in the world, they leave Europe and go to Asia. The fact that a world-class coach is coming to Asia means that his value has diminished and his vitality in Europe has ended. It’s like declaring this publicly.

Despite being sacked from AS Roma, has Coach Mourinho completely fallen from his prime? no. Many clubs in Europe still want him. A director like this comes to Asia, which lowers his value as a director? What if you could lose your money and your reputation? It is highly unlikely.

Looking at the foreign coaches who visited the Korean national team, they fit this formula. Coach Paulo Bento led the Portuguese national team, but then suffered a decline and was pushed out to China. He failed and went through a crisis in China, and managed to lay the foundation for a comeback with the Korean national team. What can Director Klinsmann say? Every team he was in charge of showed their incredible abilities. Coach Guus Hiddink. There was great justification for being the host city of the 2002 World Cup, and it was recruiting that meant enormous investment and effort. It was a special case.

There are no roads to come to Asia. It is possible in Saudi Arabia. Although the coach Robert Mancini has fallen far from his peak, he is still a leader who led one of the big clubs in Europe. He went to Saudi Arabia. His annual salary is $28 million (37.7 billion won). In the past, China was also able to do this. Italy’s World Cup champion Marcello Lippi’s annual salary when he was in charge of China’s Guangzhou Henda was 23 million euros (33.4 billion won).

The only way for Asia to attract great generals is to do like Saudi Arabia and China. This is also the reason why Saudi Arabian clubs can openly send love calls to coach Mourinho. In the past, money was ultimately the power that allowed Chinese clubs to recruit many world-famous players. The reason Asia gives them a lot of money is in exchange for the risk of losing their reputation. The Korean national team and the Korean Football Association do not have the ability to do that.

If there is no money, there is only one way for Coach Mourinho to come to Korea. It ‘gives talent’. Unless Coach Mourinho has the heart to serve the development of Asian and Korean football, that will not happen.
