Life Sentence Handed Down in Alexa bartell Rock-Throwing Murder Case

Joseph Koenig, 20, will spend his life in prison for the murder of Alexa bartell in a random rock-throwing incident. A jury previously found Koenig guilty on 19 counts related to the crime, which occurred in April 2023.
Bartell, 20, was killed when a 9.3-pound rock struck her head after being thrown through her windshield as she drove on Indiana Street near the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge.The jefferson County man received the mandatory life sentence for first-degree murder in Colorado, plus an additional 60 years for other charges, according to the first Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Kelly Bartell, Alexa’s mother, addressed the court during the sentencing. She said the loss of her daughter “shattered my soul.”
“There is no part of my life that will ever be the same,” Kelly bartell said.“…We will honor (Alexa) by living with the love, light and laughter that she gave so freely, and we will carry her with us always.”
Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak, both 18 at the time of the incident, were also charged in connection with Bartell’s death. karol-Chik pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder, receiving a 45-year sentence. Kwak pleaded guilty to assault and attempted assault and was sentenced to 32 years. Both men testified at Koenig’s trial as part of their plea agreements.
At the sentencing, Koenig apologized to the court and the Bartell family, stating, “I deserve the punishment that I get today. I hope that it takes away some small bit of the pain I’ve caused.”
