Trick Williams, the reigning TNA World Champion, is set to defend his title against Josh Briggs on “WWE NXT.” Williams’ title reign has seen prosperous defenses against Elijah and Mike Santana.
On Tuesday’s “NXT,” Williams, Wes Lee, and AJ Francis faced Briggs, Elijah, and Yoshiki Inamura. Inamura secured the win for his team by pinning Williams after a top-rope splash.
Following the match, Briggs and Inamura discussed their championship aspirations. Inamura suggested Briggs take his place for a title match against Williams, while Inamura pursues Oba Femi’s NXT Championship.WWE confirmed Briggs will challenge Williams for the TNA World Championship on the next “NXT” episode.
Inamura joined “NXT” last year through WWE’s partnership with Pro-Wrestling NOAH. He and Briggs have been active in the “NXT” tag team division,but have not yet secured the NXT Tag Team Championships. The upcoming match will test Briggs’ ability to step into a singles role.
