Paris Bridge to Become a “Grotto” in Homage to Christo adn Jeanne-Claude
Iconic Pont-Neuf to be transformed by Street Artist JR in 2025
Paris’s historic Pont-Neuf bridge, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks,is set for a dramatic change in September 2025. Renowned French street artist JR will create a monumental installation, turning the bridge into a “grotto” inspired by the city’s quarried stone foundations.
This enterprising project, commissioned by the Fondation Christo and Jeanne-Claude, pays homage to the iconic artist duo who famously wrapped the Pont-Neuf in fabric in 1985. JR’s installation, envisioned as a temporary spectacle visible both day and night, will feature large, rock-like formations connecting the bridge’s left and right banks.
“The project aims to open to the public in September 2025 for a duration of two weeks, transforming the Pont Neuf into a grotto at the heart of Paris,” the foundation stated in a press release.
JR, known for his large-scale, ephemeral collages displayed across the globe, has received the support of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo for this project.
“I am delighted with this gift offered to Paris and all those who love it,” Hidalgo said. The installation will be funded entirely through private donations.
This project echoes the legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude,who captivated the world with their large-scale,temporary art installations. Their wrapping of the Pont-neuf in 1985 drew millions of visitors, and their posthumous wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in 2021 continued their tradition of transforming iconic Parisian landmarks.
JR’s “grotto” promises to be another unforgettable addition to Paris’s artistic landscape, offering a unique perspective on the city’s history and its enduring relationship with art.
